Yonas, the halloween ninja
First, a quick introduction. What’s your name, and what do you do?
I’m Yonas Sandbæk, and I’m a front-end developer at Creuna Oslo. I’m quite a versatile developer, with experience in many languages, but currently only working with HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
And who are you off-duty?
I’m a graphical developer, coding my different ideas in Processing. I’m also a big addict of gaming and cooking, spending hours each week on both.
What got you started doing what you do?
This was back in 2000, I got my first web-job (as a designer, if you can believe that). After 6 months of the developer failing to produce anything, they fired him, and I took over. It took me three weeks from start to finish, working as both designer and developer, learning ASP as I went along. I must admit, there were issues with everything, but I had a nack for figuring out how things worked, and making what we needed. Little by little I learned more about standards, and got rid of that terrible everything-should-be-a-table habbit.
A couple of years later, I started working for APT, which used PHP as their developing language. I immediately fell in love with it for it’s logic and structure, and has been my preferred serverside language since.
Some years later, I decided to pursue another path, and went to Denmark to learn about game-development. Due to the lack in challenge, and accidentally stumbling upon Processing, I started making my own small games in that, feeling I had more control over what happened and how it all was built up. I continued to play with it, and have since then created several hundred small and large experiments. It is my favorite playground, and I’d love to spend more time there.
What have your greatest inspirations been, and why?
Some of the Processing-gurus have definitely been a great source of inspiration over the years, making me push myself further, and force myself to be more structured.
Have there been any paradigm shifts in your career?
Learning Processing opened a whole new world for me. An empty canvas, which can turn into anything I set my mind to. Just by adding some text. Objected oriented programming also made a lot more sense to me here, and has helped me in other languages.
If you could change one part of your industry, what would that be?
Browsers! It’s about time that IE dies. And that the others follow the standards.
What is a perfect day on the job?
When I have just started a new project with a pretty design. It’s always fun to analyze and find out which methods and techniques I should use, and start building the rough framework.
What’s your favorite piece of music?
This varies from week to week. Right now, I’m listening a lot to Pomplamoose, but I love groups like Röyksopp, Daft punk, Fatboy slim and many more.
What’s your favorite book?
The Alchymist
Who is your daddy, and what does he do?
His name is Latif, and he works at major print-factory.
Any parting words?
If you have a desire, push forward and believe in yourself. With strong enough will and persistance, you’ll get there in the end!
